How Italian Translation and Legalization Work in Egypt

According to the Italian Embassy in Cairo, Egyptian documents for use in Italy follow this order:

  1. Get the official original from the issuing authority — civil registry, school, university or court.
  2. Legalize it at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  3. Translate it into Italian — this is where we come in.
  4. Submit the original and translation to the Italian Embassy through the VFS Global centres in Cairo or Alexandria, where the Embassy certifies the translation's conformity to the original.
Good to know: Egyptian civil registry offices now issue some bilingual certificates with an Italian translation, which the Embassy says speeds up the process — ask for them when you request birth or marriage certificates. For university admission, many Italian universities accept degrees and transcripts issued in English without translation, while documents in Arabic must be translated into Italian. Always check the latest checklist from the Embassy, VFS or your university — or send it to us and we'll tell you exactly what needs translating.

Italian Translation for Study in Italy

Egyptian students applying to Italian universities typically need:

  • Pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal
  • Thanaweya Amma or degree certificate, translated and legalized
  • Transcript of grades (and syllabi for recognition)
  • Declaration of Value from the Italian Embassy, or a CIMEA statement of comparability
  • Proof of financial means for the study visa (bank statements)
  • Birth certificate and passport for enrolment and residence permit

The Italian study-visa checklist asks for education certificates legalized by the Consular Office of the Italian Embassy in Cairo, plus the Declaration of Value where the university requires it. Read our full guide to Italy student visa requirements for Egyptians.

Italian Translation – Frequently Asked Questions

Does my translation need to be certified by the Italian Embassy?

For many uses in Italy, yes. The Italian Embassy in Cairo certifies that the Italian translation conforms to the original, after the original has been legalized by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applications are submitted through VFS Global in Cairo or Alexandria.

Should I translate before or after the Egyptian Foreign Ministry legalization?

The original document is legalized by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs first, then translated into Italian and submitted to the Italian Embassy with the original.

Do Italian universities accept documents in English?

Many do. Several Italian universities accept certificates and transcripts issued in English without translation, while Arabic documents need an Italian translation. Check your university's requirements or send them to us.

What is the Declaration of Value?

It is a document issued by the Italian Embassy describing the value of your qualification in the Egyptian education system. Many universities also accept a CIMEA statement of comparability instead.

How long does a certified Italian translation take?

Short documents such as certificates and IDs can often be delivered the same day. Larger files are scheduled according to their size, and we confirm the delivery date with your quote.
