Canada now runs a dedicated category for Express Entry doctors, and it has already held three draws in 2026. However, there is a catch that many Egyptian physicians miss. The new category only accepts doctors who already have work experience in Canada. So, for most doctors still practising in Egypt, it is not the first step.
Instead, the realistic route has two parts. First, you get your medical degree recognised in Canada. Then, you enter Express Entry through the wider healthcare draws, which accept experience gained abroad. This guide explains what launched, who qualifies, and which documents you should prepare.

What Launched: The New Category for Express Entry Doctors
On 8 December 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced new measures to attract more doctors. The main one was a new Express Entry category called Physicians with Canadian work experience. IRCC said invitations would start in early 2026.
That promise was kept. According to IRCC’s official draw records, the category has held three rounds so far:
- 19 February 2026: 391 invitations, minimum score 169
- 24 June 2026: 271 invitations, minimum score 223
- 3 September 2026: 229 invitations, minimum score 198
Notably, these cut-off scores are far lower than in most other draws. As a result, the category is a strong option for doctors who already work in Canada.
In addition, IRCC reserved 5,000 admission spaces for provinces and territories. They can use them to nominate licensed doctors who hold job offers. Nominated doctors also get work permit processing in about 14 days, so they can start working while their permanent residence application continues.
Who Qualifies: Canadian Work Experience Is Required
To enter the physicians category, you need at least 12 months of full-time work experience in Canada within the last three years. Equivalent part-time work also counts. Moreover, the experience must be in one of three occupations:
- Specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine (NOC 31100)
- Specialists in surgery (NOC 31101)
- General practitioners and family physicians (NOC 31102)
You must also meet the basic rules of Express Entry, which means qualifying for one of three programmes. These are the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class or the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
In short, years of practice in Egyptian hospitals do not count towards this category. Therefore, an Egyptian doctor usually needs a Canadian licence and Canadian experience first.
The Healthcare Draws: A Route That Accepts Foreign Experience
The Healthcare and social services occupations category works differently. It covers the same three physician codes, plus nurses, therapists and many other roles. Importantly, you can gain your 12 months of experience from the last three years in Canada or abroad.
IRCC’s draw records show three healthcare rounds in 2026:
- 20 February 2026: 4,000 invitations, minimum score 467
- 25 June 2026: 4,000 invitations, minimum score 475
- 4 September 2026: 3,500 invitations, minimum score 475
The invitations are much larger, but the scores are much higher. So your age, language results, education and experience must add up to a competitive profile. For example, strong English or French test results can lift your score a lot.
However, keep in mind that Express Entry eligibility is not a licence to practise. To work as a doctor in Canada, you still need a licence from the medical regulator of your province.
Credential Recognition Steps for Express Entry Doctors from Egypt
First, before you create a profile, start the recognition process. Most steps run through the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and its online portal, physiciansapply.ca.
- Open a physiciansapply.ca account. This is where you upload your documents and track every request.
- Request source verification. The MCC checks your final medical diploma directly with your university.
- Request an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). If your main occupation is physician, IRCC says the MCC must do your ECA. Once your diploma passes verification, the MCC usually issues the report within 14 business days. In addition, IRCC can then view it directly.
- Consider the MCC Qualifying Examination (MCCQE Part I). Graduates of eligible schools in the World Directory of Medical Schools can apply. Many licensing routes expect this exam.
- Contact your target province’s regulator. Each province sets its own licensing path, so check its rules early.
An MCC ECA stays valid for five years for immigration. Also, it must still be valid when you submit your application, not just your profile.
Documents Egyptian Doctors Should Prepare
Express Entry doctors from Egypt should gather these papers early, because Egyptian universities and offices can take weeks to issue them:
- Final medical degree (MBBCh) certificate and full transcript
- Internship (imtiyaz) completion certificate
- Egyptian Medical Syndicate registration certificate
- Ministry of Health licence to practise
- Experience letters from every hospital or clinic you list
- Specialty certificates, such as a master’s degree or fellowship
- A valid passport and approved language test results
- Police certificates, when IRCC asks for them
Experience letters deserve special care. IRCC expects them to show details such as your job title, main duties, dates of employment and weekly hours. If one detail is missing, your experience may not count.
Which Documents Need Certified Translation and How COT Helps
Egyptian offices issue many of these documents in Arabic. So, for your Express Entry application, IRCC needs an English or French translation. Also, unless the translator is certified in Canada, the translator must swear an affidavit. Read our guide to IRCC translation rules for the full details.
There is one important exception. For documents uploaded to physiciansapply.ca, the MCC only accepts translations from its own listed providers. Therefore, check the MCC’s translation page before you order anything for that portal.
For your IRCC file and other uses, COT translates the documents doctors need most. These include syndicate certificates, experience letters, internship certificates and police clearance certificates. Every certified translation carries our official stamp and a signed translator certification.
Then we deliver a clear PDF for online upload, plus a printed, stamped copy on request. In addition, specialist human translators handle the medical terms, not machine tools. Meanwhile, you can send scans on WhatsApp at 01111760177 for a quick quote. Our immigration translation services cover the rest of your family’s papers too.
